Plastic is a fossil-fuel material. Plastic pollution is visible in landfills and oceans; its climate footprint begins earlier, through extraction, refining, polymer production, product conversion and end-of-life treatment.

The numbers

How plastic fuels climate change.

The climate impact does not begin when an object is thrown away. Fossil feedstock is extracted and refined, polymers are made in energy-intensive processes, products are formed, transported and eventually treated as waste.

1.8bntonnes of greenhouse-gas emissions came from the plastics lifecycle in 2019.
3.4%of global emissions in 2019 were linked to the plastics lifecycle.
90%came from producing plastics and converting them into products.

The trajectory

More plastic means more lifecycle emissions.

That baseline would equal a projected 4.5% of global greenhouse-gas emissions. The point is not that every plastic object has the same footprint; it is that material demand keeps compounding.

Materials, with context

Why bamboo belongs in the conversation.

A renewable input can reduce dependence on fossil-derived material, but the whole lifecycle still matters: cultivation, processing, adhesives, transport, durability and disposal.

Bamboo renews on a shorter cycle.

INBAR’s sustainable-management manual states that bamboo matures in 3-5 years and can then be harvested annually for many years, depending on species and conditions.

The toothbrush evidence is encouraging, not universal.

A five-year lifecycle study comparing four toothbrush types found bamboo and replaceable-head plastic toothbrushes had the lowest impacts across the categories studied.

The India context

Daily products sit inside a much larger material system.

A toothbrush will not solve the climate crisis. But daily oral-care, cleaning and packaged-wellness products are bought again and again, so their materials quietly shape manufacturing demand every month.

The honest opportunity is category by category: reduce avoidable fossil-derived material and make the remaining material legible.

Current practice

What Valar Life is doing.

We focus on decisions we can show on the product page and improve in the supply chain, without turning global climate studies into product-specific claims.

Material disclosure

Material, pack size, routine use and care sit before the purchase decision, not in hidden fine print.

Lower-plastic alternatives

We use bamboo and coconut coir where they are suitable replacements for conventional plastic household objects.

Packaging restraint

We prefer compact paper-based packaging where hygiene, food safety and transport durability allow it.

Care and end-of-use guidance

Useful-life and disposal guidance are part of product information because a material choice only works when it is used and handled properly.

Claim boundary

What we will not claim.

Climate communication should make uncertainty visible. Until Valar Life completes product-specific lifecycle assessments, we will not turn global studies into precise savings for our own products.

  • We will not call a product carbon neutral or carbon negative without an independently reviewable lifecycle method.
  • We will not publish exact CO2 avoided per item by borrowing averages from unrelated supply chains.
  • We will not say one material is automatically sustainable; processing, durability and end-of-life still count.
  • We will correct this page when better evidence changes the picture.

The reading behind the page.

Global numbers are reproduced as dated estimates, not presented as Valar Life measurements. Product-level language is deliberately qualitative until we have supply-chain-specific lifecycle data.
